Using Your Election Resources: How to Find the Information You Need

This course will provide a deeper understanding of several important websites & search tools presented in the Registrar of Voters Foundations Course Sections 1 & 3 including the following: SOTS, SEEC, ROVAC, & CGA, CT Library & FOIC. Students will find managing their duties easier once they have a working knowledge of how to find the information necessary to answer questions that may arise during the performance of their job as Registrars of Voters. This course will provide the necessary skills to independently research questions before (or in lieu of) reaching out to outside sources such as the Secretary of the State's Office & the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

Course Objectives:

  • Attendees will take a closer look at the following websites:  SOTS, SEEC, ROVAC, CGA.CT.gov, CT Library, FOIA.  The instructor will walk through the websites in real time with the attendees so they can better understand how to navigate them and how to find the information relevant to varying circumstances that arise during their day to day duties.
  • Attendees will take the course in a computer lab so that they can perform the searches simultaneously with the instructor.  Prior to class, attendees are invited to bring specific search topics/questions to class.
  • In addition, attendees will take a closer look at the search tools used to find relevant CT election statutes and regulations. The instructor will teach the attendees how to search for a bill, public act, statute or regulation, explain the search results, and give search tips and best practices.
  • The instructor will also walk through different sample searches in real time with the attendees so that they can better understand how to search for a statute or regulation.  Attendees will then be asked to search for different information in class and the instructor will answer/address questions/challenges that arise during said searches.

Intended Audience:

The target audience for this course is any registrar of voters, their deputies and assistants who need a thorough understanding of how to search the aforementioned websites to find the information necessary to independently answer the questions that arise during the performance of their duties.  It also provides them with an understanding of how to search Connecticut statutes and regulations.
